Overcoming Covetousness: Insights from God's Word
As we journey through life, we often find ourselves desiring what others have. Whether it's a bigger house, a better job or a fancier car, we can easily fall into the trap of covetousness. However, God warns us against coveting in His Word. In Exodus 20:17, we read:
"You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor."
So, how can we overcome covetousness? Here are a few steps:
Be content with what you have: 1 Timothy 6:6-8 says,
"But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that."
Focus on eternal treasures: Matthew 6:19-21 says,
"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."
Pray for God's help: Philippians 4:6-7 says,
"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."
For this morning’s prayer I’ve added a few more words about ending covetousness. Will you pray with me today?
